Carrying the Blue Flame Breath of the Wild

Welcome to IGN's Walkthrough for the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This page contains information on an alternate main quest - Locked Mementos.

Breath of the Wild is a very open-ended game, a first for the series. As such, the guide below is just one of many possible ways you can experience the game. We recommend you take time to explore the world at large in-between the main objectives you are given.

This is a quest gained after you Seek Out Impa, and is worth undertaking if you wish to understand more about your Sheikah Slate, and the memories you've lost of the past. In order to repair the missing parts of the slate, you need to travel to the far off Hateno Village, a place largely untouched by the calamity 100 years prior.

The Battlefield of Fort Hateno

From Kakariko Village, head back South across the bridge and take a left before the Dueling Peaks Stable to travel West towards Necluda and the village you seek.

You'll pass by a large battlefield of old, where dozens of rusted Guardians stand silent in the fields. It's a good place to scavenge for parts to sell or keep for later - just watch for Bokoblins waiting in ambush in the fields.

The field ends with Fort Hateno, where the Guardians were pushed back at a large wall, and a traveling man nearby may tell you more about what happened 100 years ago. Further up you can find a cabin with a man named Calip inside. He studies ancient shrine riddles, and if you ask him, he'll divulge a riddle to a Shrine Quest, a type of Side Quest that unearths shrines not ordinarily found in the world. If you're up for it, take The Cursed Statue side quest and head further down the path into a canyon on the left full of small statues. Since the riddle mentions dark light revealing cursed eyes, you must return at night to find a statue with glowing eyes. Shooting it will reveal Kam Urog Shrine.

Moving along, be careful as you ascend the hills, you may just spot a traveler who will ask to speak with you. It's possible this traveler is in fact part of the Yiga Clan - and wants you dead. That's right, assassins are now out to get you, so be wary of their ninja-like dashes and skills as they teleport around to attack from above.

Arriving at Hateno Village

Up the road from the hill, there's a small crossing over the river you can take if you'd like to unlock the Resurrection Tower for this area. The place has many Moblins and Bokoblins hiding behind rocks waiting to ambush you, and Hateno Tower itself is full of spiky brambles - but you can either work your way around them as you climb or light them on fire with a torch or fire arrow to get rid of the mess. From here, it's a straight shot via either path to Hateno Village - just watch for Bokoblins on both roads lying in wait.

As you come upon Hateno Village, a guard Thadd will stop you, but he'll give up and let you go. Hateno Village is fairly big, boasting several stores that include a General Store, Armor Shop, Inn, and even a Dye Works that lets you dye your clothing if you have the right ingredients! There's also a shrine in the village itself - Myahm Agana Shrine. There's a few Side Quests to be found in the area, and a Goddess Statue to trade in Spirit Orbs.

The lab you seek is located up the hill past the town, where signs are telling you to go away. Inside, you'll meet a small girl who directs you to a man - but it's a ruse: Purah is in fact the director of the lab. Apparently, she knows all about you, even if you don't remember her. She'll agree to help repair your Sheikah Slate - but only if you run an errand first: She needs a blue flame from an ancient furnace in Hateno Village, and the flame must be carried back to the lab's furnace. If you're lacking at torch, there's one in the lab near the door.

The Ancient Furnace's Flame

Head back down to the village and look for a blue sheikah structure on the North side of town up on a small hill under some rocks. Using your torch, light the blue flame and make the long journey back up to the lab. To the left of the lab entrance, light the receptacle - which will activate the Sheikah tech in the area, setting the lab as a new fast travel point.

Inside, speak with Purah to begin repairs: You will now have access to three new features of the Sheikah Slate: The Camera Rune, Album, and Hyrule Compendium. Using the Camera Rune, you can now take photos - either of the world at large or of yourself, and save them to an album. As a bonus, any pictures you take of certain Creatures, Monsters, Materials, and Weapons will all be catalogued.

After snapping a picture of Purah, she'll drop another bombshell - there's already pictures taken in the album - taken by Princess Zelda herself. Purah believes you likely went with her to all of these locations, and finding them may be the key to restoring your memories, but only Impa could be sure. Before leaving, be sure to speak to her again about Ancient Materials to learn of a new Side Quest: Robbie's Research, where you can bring ancient tech from Guardians to her assistant Robbie, who lives in the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. She can do some upgrades as well, starting the Slated For Upgrades side quest.

Back in Kakariko Village, speak to Impa to complete the quest, and embark upon a new one to recapture your missing memories by visiting the locations that Princess Zelda took pictures of. This unlocks a new quest: Captured Memories - but another quest is available with your new Camera Rune that's worth undertaking - Find the Fairy Fountain.
